Lignum Vitae Floors Lignum Vitae is dubbed “ironwood,” because it is one of the heaviest and densest woods around. It is an exotic wood native to the West Indies and South America. It is important for uses requiring strength, weight and hardness like for building mallet heads, bearings and rollers. In addition to its use in carvings, it is used for ship bearings and flooring materials. The lignum vitae tree can grow to a diameter of about 12 inches wide. When freshly cut, it exudes a reddish brown color but deepens to an olive green or blackish color when exposed to oxygen. Because of its density, it can be difficult to work with, however it has natural lubricating properties which makes it polish really well.
