Hickory Floors This type of wood is great for a rustic or ranch-style designs. Depending on what look is desired, different grades of Hickory are available to choose from. Hickory’s heartwood is tan or red with a white or cream sapwood color. The texture is moderately rough and it has a closed grain. It is a strong, tough wood that has a rigidity not found in other commercial wood types. On the downside, sanding may be difficult due to its density and the wood is prone to splitting. However, with the proper care, you could walk on a lifetime of value.
